Empowered. Supported. Engaged.

Statement from the Afghan American Community Center –

We condemn the senseless and horrific shooting of National Guard members in Washington, D.C., by a man from Afghanistan. We ask for justice and the highest possible punishment for this evil act.

Our prayers are with the National Guard members and their families. Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe were using their lives in the most selfless of ways – to help and protect others. Sarah had her entire life in front of her.

We stand with and honor the National Guard, the U.S. military and law enforcement who serve and protect America, our home and the country we love. We pray for peace and healing.

Please know the actions of a few do not define our community or reflect our values.

Our community rejects violence, hate and extremism and stands for peace and unity.

Many Afghans worked closely with the U.S. military and were employed by the U.S. government for 20 years in Afghanistan during America’s longest war. We protected each other on the battlefield; we were war-time partners. Afghans made sacrifices and risked their lives for the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. We stood with America even over our own country.

Afghans know the sting of violence from the Taliban and other terrorist groups who have killed and threatened our family members. We were brought to America by the U.S. military and are seeking peace and safety.

We are eternally grateful for the welcome we have felt in America. We have been shown kindness and support, and we will never forget it.

We have built good lives here and have become a part of our communities, neighborhoods and schools. Our children love going to school. For many of the children, America is the only home they remember and know.

We’re valued employees in our workplaces. We’ve volunteered at cultural fairs and helped feed the hungry as a way to give back and foster understanding. We’ve enrolled in college. We’ve made friends and built lifelong connections.

This is home.

We are devastated to see violence in our country. We stand united with our fellow Americans and with those who protect this country.
